Small Business Endorses Mick Mulvaney for Congress

Key voting bloc knows Mulvaney is supporter of free enterprise system

WASHINGTON, D.C. Oct. 28, 2010 – Today the National Federation of Independent Business, America’s leading small business association, announced its full support and endorsement of Mick Mulvaney for election to the U.S. House of Representatives in South Carolina’s 5th District.

“Small business knows that Mick Mulvaney is the proven, pro-small business candidate in this race,” said Lisa Goeas, NFIB vice president of political operations. “He has actively supported small business since he was first elected to the state house, and was recognized as a pro-business leader on several occasions. We know he would be a successful advocate for South Carolina’s small businesses in Washington.”

Especially outspoken on healthcare, Mulvaney is a strong opponent of the new healthcare law, advocating instead for reforms that truly lower costs, and offer more choices and flexibility.

“He also believes that the federal debt must be reduced and that Washington must rein in government spending. Small businesses and families have to live within their means; he believes that government should do likewise,” said Goeas.

There are more than 81,000 small employers in South Carolina. Nationally, small businesses create more than half of the nation’s non-farm gross domestic product and have created more than 60 percent of net-new jobs in the U.S. over the past 15 years.

Small business owners and their employees vote in high numbers and are known for actively recruiting friends, family members and acquaintances to go to the polls. NFIB will encourage its members across the district to help turn out the small business vote on Mulvaney’s behalf on Election Day.

Today’s endorsement comes from NFIB’s Save America’s Free Enterprise (SAFE) Trust, the association’s political action committee, and is based on candidates’ positions on key small business issues including healthcare, taxes, and labor and regulatory issues.

Mulvaney Campaign Reports Another Strong Quarter of Campaign Contributions

10.16.2010

With $567,990 cash on hand and $598,334 raised this quarter alone, the Mulvaney campaign is well positioned for a strong finish.

Lancaster, S.C. – State Senator Mick Mulvaney, Republican candidate for Congress (SC-5), announced today that his campaign has raised more than $1.2 million from 3,500 individuals to date, and raised $598,334 in this quarter alone.

Folks in the 5th District, South Carolina at large, and all across America have stepped up to invest in our campaign to defeat one of the biggest of the big spenders in Congress: John Spratt,” said Sen. Mulvaney. “Our efforts to provide a check against the Obama Administration, and reign in the big spending is clearly resonating with voters. Folks are fed up with the direction John Spratt is taking the country, and they are working hard to change their congressman.”

Voters know that they can trust me to make the tough decisions in Washington and fight for their shared values. They know that if John Spratt goes back, then he will continue to support President Obama’s agenda – an agenda they strongly disagree with,” continued Mulvaney.

Mulvaney Responds to Reports that Obamacare Will Increase Seniors’ Health Costs

For Immediate Release
10.14.2010

“A Medicare official concedes that seniors may have to dig deeper into their wallets next year thanks to the health care law. The new analysis obtained by POLITICO finds the health care overhaul will result in increased out-of-pocket costs for seniors on Medicare Advantage plans.” ~ Politico, 10.13.2010

Lancaster, S.C. – State Senator Mick Mulvaney, Republican candidate for Congress (SC-5), today released the following statement calling on John Spratt to explain why he would sponsor a piece of legislation that is so harmful to seniors:

“News reports on Obamacare continue to read like a broken record of bad policy. First, we learned that the law would cost the government more, then we learned it would cost businesses more, then we learned the same about families, and now seniors.

“This most recent White House admission, that health care costs will increase for seniors, is just another reason to repeal the law and start over.

“Medicare Advantage, a program first begun as ‘Medicare+Choice’ under the the Balanced Budget Act of 1997, is now being destroyed by Mr. Spratt’s health care takeover. Cutting Medicare Advantage and increasing seniors’ health costs during a recession is not reform, it’s cruel.

“This new report begs the same questions that this District’s voters have been asking for months: Did John Spratt know that these cuts and cost increases were in the bill when he sponsored it? If he did, why in the world didn’t he vote against it? If he didn’t, why would vote for a bill he hadn’t read and didn’t understand?

“Either way, if folks want to change these harmful cuts and cost increases then they need to change congressmen.”

Mulvaney Recognized by 60 Plus Association

For Immediate Release
9.27.2010

60 Plus Chairman Jim Martin presents Sen. Mulvaney with the group’s Honorary Guardian of Seniors’ Rights award

Lancaster, S.C. – The Mulvaney for Congress campaign today announced that state Senator Mick Mulvaney, Republican candidate for Congress (SC-5), has been recognized by the 60 Plus Association for his commitment to fighting for seniors.

“I am humbled to receive this award from 60 Plus, and I am proud to be associated with such principled and committed fighters for seniors,” said Mulvaney. “60 Plus understands the importance of not just standing up for the promises that the federal government has made to seniors, but also ensuring that we maintain a stable and solvent social security system for the next generation.”

60 Plus Chairman Jim Martin visited Rock Hill on Sunday night to personally present the honorary award to Senator Mulvaney. Legendary entertainer Pat Boone, who is the spokesman for 60 Plus, also “sung” Sen. Mulvaney’s praises.

Calling Mulvaney a “fighter for the elderly”, Boone, speaking for 60 Plus, remarked, “I’m still singing at concerts, but today I am singing the praises of Mick Mulvaney.”

“Mick Mulvaney can always be counted on to protect Social Security and Medicare,” Boone said. “Mick Mulvaney will be a tax cutter, protecting the pocket books of senior citizens. Nationally, 60 Plus calls on over 5.5 million seniors for support, including almost 60,000 in South Carolina, so I believe I can speak on behalf of seniors when I say that they can count on Mick Mulvaney.”

The 60 Plus Association’s Guardian Award is presented to both Democrats and Republicans in Congress based on their “senior friendly” voting records. The Honorary Award is given to those running for office and is based on their views on seniors’ issues.

Mr. Spratt, in this country, we have open debates

“While Spratt is debating his opponent, it’s not without restrictions.

No TV or video cameras will be allowed at Tuesday’s debate, though the candidates will hold a news conference after it’s over.” ~ Charlotte Observer, September 6, 2010

Lancaster, S.C. – September 6, 2010 – State Senator Mick Mulvaney, Republican candidate for Congress (SC-5), today criticized John Spratt and his campaign for refusing to allow their debate tomorrow to be televised. According to the Charlotte Observer, John Spratt and his campaign are the reason that the Mulvaney-Spratt debate tomorrow night will not be seen by anyone outside the room.

“The people of this district deserve a full, free and fair discussion of the issues. Unfortunately, that’s never going to happen since Mr. Spratt is banning cameras from debates,” said Sen. Mulvaney. “By closing off the debate, he is refusing the most basic expectations of transparency.”

“This is America,” continued Mulvaney. “In this country, we debate the issues and let the people decide – we don’t manipulate the process to keep the press and the public out.”

The Charlotte Observer reported that the Spratt campaign’s excuse for refusing access to news stations is because a clip of a speech by Agriculture Department staffer Shirley Sherrod was filmed and taken out of context by a blogger several weeks ago.

“I guess Mr. Spratt just doesn’t want to be televised when talking about his support for bailouts, tax hikes, big-spending, and Obamacare – but he cast those votes and he should be willing to defend them,” said Sen. Mulvaney. “Instead, all Mr. Spratt is giving us is excuses.”

Is John Spratt Looking at the Same Economy?

“As Democrats, we’ve taken actions to get the economy back on its feet.” – John Spratt, Sept. 2, 2010

Lancaster, S.C. – September 3, 2010 – State Senator Mick Mulvaney, Republican candidate for Congress (SC-5), today released the following statement regarding reports that the national unemployment rate has increased to 9.6% and family health care costs are increasing by 14%:

“As more hardworking Americans lose their jobs, and families are realizing that Obamacare actually increased health care costs, my opponent is running around congratulating himself on a job well done. The truth of the matter is the borrow-to-spend and regulate-to-stimulate policies championed by Mr. Spratt are the exact wrong direction for this country to be taking. Yet our Congressman keeps following Speaker Pelosi and President Obama down that path – dragging us along with him.

“In South Carolina, small businesses drive economic growth, not the government, but Obamacare and a slew of upcoming tax hikes are going to make it harder for our district’s small businesses to stay afloat. This comes at an especially bad time when you consider that the national unemployment rate is getting worse.

“Mr. Spratt continues to make the ridiculous claim that his actions have gotten the economy back on its feet. I can only wonder what economy he’s looking at, because it certainly isn’t the economy of the 5th Congressional District.”

Also notable is that the “underemployment” rate rose to 16.7 percent nationally and is at least 19 percent in South Carolina. The “underemployment rate” is a combination of unemployed workers who are actively looking for a job, part-time workers who are looking for full-time employment, and part-time workers who want a full-time job, but are not actively looking.

Mulvaney Campaign Releases First TV Ad

Lancaster, S.C. – August 30, 1010 – The Mulvaney for Congress campaign today launched its first television ad, which will be shown district-wide. The ad introduces voters to Mick, his wife Pam, and their triplets. This ad also explains why Mick – a small businessman, State Senator, and Little League coach – decided to run for Congress. He is running to get our country back on the right track, put people back to work, and act as the check against the Obama-Pelosi agenda that 5th District voters expect.

Mulvaney Invites Speaker Pelosi to SC-5

Mulvaney: “I would welcome the opportunity to have you and Mr. Spratt, together, educate us on the supposed virtues of government-run health care.”

Lancaster, S.C. – August 16, 2010 – State Senator Mick Mulvaney, Republican candidate for Congress (SC-5), today sent a letter to Speaker Nancy Pelosi asking her to add the 5th Congressional District of South Carolina to her list of campaign stops. Senator Mulvaney is running against 14 term incumbent Congressman John Spratt in a race recently labeled a “toss up” by The Cook Political Report.

The text of the letter can be read below:

Madam Speaker,

According to an article by the Associated Press (“Pelosi stumps for Democrats as GOP fires away” – August 13, 2010) you are currently campaigning actively for many embattled House Democrats. The article also notes that you are doing this even though many consider you to be a “divisive” figure. As much as I oppose your agenda, I can appreciate such forthrightness.

Therefore, I invite you to come to the 5th District of South Carolina. As you know, it is the home of your Budget Committee Chairman John Spratt.

Mr. Spratt certainly qualifies as a loyal supporter of yours. As I am sure you are aware, he has voted with Democrat leaders 98% of the time the last few years. He was there when you needed him on the bailouts, cap-and-trade, and most especially on health care. Many of us in South Carolina remember his impassioned introduction of you on the night of the final vote of that historically bad bill. Certainly, by any measure, he has earned your support in this election.

Although Mr. Spratt originally took the position that Obamacare was indeed a bad bill, it seems that you were able to convince him that the real problem is that folks just don’t understand the new law well enough. In that spirit, I would welcome the opportunity to have you and Mr. Spratt, together, educate us on the supposed virtues of government-run health care. Since you and Mr. Spratt apparently believe that South Carolinians and other Americans are “uneducated” about the new law, why not come to South Carolina and explain the merits of its massive tax hikes and unconstitutional individual mandates?

I realize that South Carolina is a long way from San Francisco, but I think Mr. Spratt could benefit from your help when explaining his recent voting record. So, again, I invite you to add the 5th Congressional District of South Carolina to your list of campaign stops. We look forward to having you.

Sincerely,

South Carolina State Senator Mick Mulvaney

Obamacare’s anti-business tax provisions

Mulvaney: “Did John Spratt know this burden was included in the bill when he voted for it?  If so, why did he do this to our job creators?”

Lancaster, S.C. – August 3, 2010 - State Senator Mick Mulvaney, Republican candidate for Congress (SC-5), today released the following statement regarding the numerous tax provisions – especially the expanded 1099 tax form mandates – within the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act that are unrelated to health care reform:

“Not one single person, including John Spratt, understood how Obamacare was going to affect our country before it was passed.  Unfortunately for millions of businesses, charities, and other organizations, they are now realizing that Obamacare includes new tax regulations that will mean more paperwork and higher fees.
