S.C. Senator Mick Mulvaney today issued the following statement regarding John Spratt’s refusal to call for the removal of House Ways
and Means Chairman Charlie Rangel, who was recently found guilty of violating House ethics rules.
“While John Spratt has been passing budgets with trillion dollar deficits, Charlie Rangel has been passing the tax hikes forcing you to
pay for them,” Mulvaney said. “It’s not surprising, sadly, that Congressman Spratt hasn’t called for this corrupt Washington insider
to step down.”
In addition to being found guilty of accepting corporate money to fund his travel to the Caribbean, Rangel is facing a host of other ethical
and tax allegations – including allegations that he did not report income on his tax return.
“Obviously failing to pay your taxes is par for the course if you’re applying for a job in President Obama’s Cabinet, but this is the guy
who writes our nation’s tax law,” Mulvaney said.
Mulvaney said Spratt’s refusal to call for Rangel’s resignation was yet another example of how far his priorities have shifted away from South
Carolina taxpayers.
“Unfortunately, this is what happens when a one-time moderate turns into a loyal foot soldier for Nancy Pelosi and Barack Obama,” Mulvaney
said. “Once again, Congressman Spratt is no longer representing the best interests of the taxpayers of South Carolina, he¹s representing the best
interests of tax-dodging Washington politicians.”
Mulvaney also noted that it was Rangel who led the effort to pass a massive tax hike on small business owners to pay for Obama¹s
socialized medicine plan a tax hike that Spratt has voted for once already and continues to support.
“Over a dozen Democrats are now calling Charlie Rangel to be removed,” Mulvaney said. “If Congressman Spratt were truly interested in
protecting South Carolina taxpayers, he would be one of them.”
